tHE SYLLABUS

HSC biology tutoring at SIGI Learners is based on the current HSC biology syllabus, which contains 4 core modules:

Module 1
Cells as the Basis of Life

Module 2
Organisation of Living Things

Module 3
Biological Diversity

Module 4
Ecosystem Dynamics

HOW TO APPROACH

  • The development of theories of evolution
  • The development of understanding of genetics and inheritance
  • The history of diseases, their evolution and how technology has evolved to combat them

Modern biology has moved away from being merely understood – it goes hand in hand with application. Increased understanding of biological concepts has resulted in new practical techniques and technologies that have evolved with knowledge and that play a key role in current research areas such as medical sciences.

It is imperative that students gain a basic understanding of the complex processes that are the heart of scientific research, such as genetic engineering, antibiotic resistance, disease management, artificial organs (eg. artificial blood, renal dialysis, cochlear implants) and many more.

The HSC course encourages students to understand the principles behind the scientific method in gathering and analyzing data in a scientific manner in order to draw valid conclusions and provide plausible explanations for both new and pre-existing phenomena.

It is quite clear that the applications of modern biology have huge implications for improving society, not only in the medical sciences, but also in economic and industrial applications such as agriculture. With these come numerous ethical issues that must be considered to prevent misuse of new technologies.

How to Study

Revise – Since there is a lot more to memorize to this course than other science subjects, it’s a good idea to revise constantly. Make sure you are able to keep up with your work and don’t fall behind – once you fall behind, it is extremely difficult to catch back up

Understand – Biology study is made a lot easier by understanding process rather than trying to rote learn it. If you understand what the implications of each step of the process is, it isn’t too hard to work out what the next steps should be. This cuts down the amount of material you have to memorise

Organise – Remember that your notes should not be a brain vomit of everything that you possibly know on the topic (like a textbook). Your notes should be a brief but detailed summary of all the important points. If you are a student at SIGI Learners, your theory booklets make a great set of notes – they’re structured and concise, yet detailed

Detail – Biology has a strong emphasis on key words and trends to be very specific. Little details like definitions, names of people, techniques, categories of things, etc. are all things that markers look out for. Make sure you know your buzz words and when and where to use them

Exam Technique – It is a good idea to practice the art of answering exam-style questions. Particular areas that are worth practicing are answering ‘Explain’ questions, which as well being very common 3 mark questions, also form the basis of extended response questions, another thing worth practicing
